I told paul we'd be back and asleep by 1:00. it is now 2:41 and we are really far away from where we sleep in this city. The girl three iMacs over is playing weird hip hop / pop really loud as she checks her e-mail (she s also talking on ICQ (do you remember the sound ICQ makes ..."Uh-Oh"). I'm dancing a little bit, but not enough that anyone would notice.

I've been wondering for a while what happens when someone you know, or I should say 'virtually know', dies? How would you even know that they had died? I have a few websites I check everyday, mostly blogs that are updated multiple times a day. But sometimes days go by with no posts. Are they dead? I doubt it, but you never know. Michele Gauler at the RCA did a nice thesis on what could happen to ones digital remains. I saw this project a while ago, and was reminded of it when I saw Time Machine, a new feature apple is putting in OS 10.5. I wonder if they considered this feature as a way of connecting with someone who has passed away. What will your loved ones think if they took a trip through your computer's history? I have asked several people to destroy my computer if I were to die suddenly. Not so much because I have dirty secrets I want to stay hidden away, but because I feel that my computer holds so much personal information that I would feel uncomfortable with anyone looking through it all. I would like a little folder on my computer for each one of my good friends where I could put pictures, movies, notes, and songs that were just for them. And when I go tits up (as my grandpa would say), those folders could be sent to them as a little thank you for the memories.

I just finished reading a Simplicity by John Maeda (it was very good), at the very end he tells a story about one of his students, Marc, who helps out at a shelter for poor people near the end of their lives. He noticed that these people had all their worldly possesions on one shelf beside their beds. He found that everyone had three things in common, a ring, a photo, and a momento of some kind.
Marc's conclusion was "Memories are all that matter in the end."

In grade ten I had an english assignment is which I had to describe what I thought heaven was, and how you could get there. I proposed that heaven was just a collection of all of your most cherished memories, and all you had to do to get there was give others more good memories than bad ones. Since then I have made a concious effort to take mental snapshots of those moments I want to keep with me. A very good friend of mine's father always encourages you to take a picture with your mind instead of a camera. I always kinda liked that...

So this is the a little weird. Some guy bought the domain that Mr. Osama used to own (that coincidently expired on sept 11, 2001), and now he is selling it off pixel by pixel. The guy sounds aight, he's donating the money to charity, etc. There is still something weird about it. How about we get some money together and buy Theodore Kaczynski's (aka unabomber) shack in the woods and sell ad space on it (that would have really pissed him off!!!)? Or maybe just sell it off in 1 ft x 1 ft pieces so that you can actually own a piece of american history.

I'm way too tired to write anything about this right now, but this is my first typeface. The letters are blue, the numbers are red. And they are all found in the Paris Metro map. I don't know wtf numa numa is, but I do remember the first time I saw some guy lipsyncing / dancing to it online. Here is my nerd/beal comment of the day... Has remix culture (mind you I'm not sure if these are technically remixes as they aren't really changing the content so much as they are the context, non the less the meaning is being altered) always existed, but it's only now that technology is easy / cheap enough that this behaviour emerges? I propose a study of youtube concerning remix culture and what factors led to the amplification of this signal (chris shut the eff up, you are such an effing loser, don't say things like that)... Check out how many "remixes" of this song there are. This might also be an interesting study about the importance of context in relation to meaning (each video offers a new context, and thus a slightly different meaning). I think I need to start reading some less nerdy books...

Consumer Bulimia Nervosa, more commonly known as consumer bulimia, is a spending disorder. New Organization Method

This is an observation from a long long time ago. Ok not that long ago.

Today in Starbucks there was a young homeless man sitting behind me in one of the big comfy green chairs. He had a pile of coins, a crooked cigarette, and an empty thermos mug infront of him. He began to organize his coins. Not by value, or size like I always do, but by whether they landed heads or tails when he flipped them. It’s funny how it really isn’t that different than how I organize them, infact I think it would be nice if more things were organized by chance. Imagine a whole store organized by some random act. Nevermind colour, size, or genre. Once his coins were organized he lined up to get another drink. He handed over his Tim Hortons travel mug, lined with a milky foam left over from his last drink. When the Barrista started to clean it before filling it with the newly ordered drink the man began to yell. Don’t clean it! Foolish Barrista. He proceeded outside to smoke his crooked cigarette and drink his $4.28 espresso bassed steamed milk beverage. He left all his belongings beside the green chair. I guess he’s not going anywhere soon. I don’t blame him, those big green chairs are comfy.

If my advertising education has taught me anything it's that good stories should have one foot in truth and one in fiction. So this is my warning to you; be weary of what I write, I am after all only a year away from being a professional persuader.
I imagine his will be a bit like the part in High Fidelity (if you haven't seen it go to Blockbuster or whatever right now) when John Cusacks exgirlfriend's new boyfriend walks into Championship Vinyl and John, Barry and Dick go through several dream sequences of beating him senseless before we realize that they don't do anything to him. This might just turn into my dream sequence.
